A world of asymmetries, by Maria Radiana Arghiropol, student at National College, Iasi
My name is Light. You must know me. I have been there, within you, and I have lifted your soul in such a way that for a fragment of second you could not even feel your body. You could not explain it, but what you did feel in those moments of bliss was me. Who am I? you might ask. Am I a portion of electromagnetic radiation? Am I knowledge? I have been there every step of your way, in the details you might have not even noticed, and, most of the time, you thought that you deserved me, that I cannot be taken away from you. Take a look around and think again.
Our world…is a world of asymmetries. I myself must obey its rules, whether they are fair or not. I myself must flood the lives of a chosen few and leave the other ones in absolute darkness. You see, it is not my choice. I have the power to create redemption and blinding pain, to hold you in my absolving arms or blindfold your soul forever. But my powers cannot be gained, neither can they be given away. They can only be shared, therefore multiplied, depending on how many peers you choose to share me with. If you have the luck of having me in your life, you should never think twice before offering a piece of me to the ones who are not as fortunate as you are. Not a drop will get spilt on others without surrounding your heart with more relief than you could have ever hoped for.
It was not my choice to be absent from so many people’s lives. Some rules or patterns of the Universe can neither be understood, nor changed, only coped with. In the first day of Creation, when God said “Let there be light”, and I was born from ashes of hope, I was meaningless without a human being to invade with warmth. You are the one that must now allow care, commitment and devotion to enter your life. Nobody has ever made the world a better place by themselves in one day. But this is how it all starts.
As a being with no state of aggregation, I can enter whatever place remains unfilled. But I cannot find these empty spots by myself. Therefore, you are the one that must find out what the ones you are willing to help lack and try to provide them with it. And I will materialize into the most soulful smile that you have ever seen; I will be there, creating a bond that will last no matter how hard society, faith and nature try you. I am the one that no one can take away from you.
I have existed since the beginning of time, and none of these asymmetries has ever changed. What changes are the needs, the social conditions, the surroundings, and, of course, the name. I believe they call it “volunteering” these days…
