Letter to you– by Clipea Clara, 16 years old, student at National College Nicolae Titulescu, Pucioasa
Dear Tomorrow,
I know I haven’t written to you for ages, but brother, believe me, I missed you a lot! It’s Time who prevented and also fooled me. That is why I couldn’t write sooner. You know, I still keep in touch with our Yesterday and it’s me the one that brings her the news about you since you can never meet.
I feel that you are years ahead of us and I’m never able to keep up with you. But I’m glad you constantly update me with information about future technologies.
I’ve recently been visited by some new friends. They introduced themselves as Hi5, Facebook and Livemocha. These are those social networks you related me about, some time ago.
At first, they made a good impression on me when they told me how easily you can get in touch with people all over the world. Social networking is a phenomenon that has taken us by storm. You can hang around inside them and they have surely paved the way for an easy communication. Whenever you are done or feel like chatting with somebody you just sign in and get to mingle with the others in only a few clicks. As a Web surfer, I feel excited by the idea that I can socialize with people from Kenya or Peru, for instance. These virtual communities bring together people of different nationalities, races, colour, religion, beliefs, ages by common interests, purpose and goal.
Later, when they left, I thought over the matter of social networking more seriously.
While they have become places for establishing connections, they are also places for identify theft and fraud. I remembered that you provide personal information about yourself, and other users take advantage of them. Sometimes, they steal money from you and you don’t even realize. Other times, they disturb your privacy and become nasty harassers.
Furthermore, they make you trust them and instead of getting a friend, you become acquainted with an enemy.
Finally, you can balance between good and bad using the best weapon – your sound judgement.
If you want to share new ideas about my new friends, please let me know and we can meet through one of them.
Best wishes,
Today.
