The Merchant of Venus– by Andra Orasanu, 18 years old, C Negruzzi National College, Iasi
I am green. Green and confused, the last of my kind. What? Sure I can talk! I have fingers, don’t I? If I didn’t use this Twiter thing, you would surely run away because of my antennas. I`m a little stuck on a Nimbus cloud though.
Mmm…what time is it? My cosmic watch reads 2110 o`clock, but I have been observing you since 2010 (A.D. as you say). The electronic press read: ”Considering statistics provided by social networking sites, the prestigious Time magazine decided that the most influential persons on Earth are Barack Obama and Lady Gaga.”
I didn`t contact the two great leaders, but I did get a better understanding of how your communication works. Let me see if I got this straight:
It has no regard of distance, it needs no voice nor tongue, you have advanced to the stage of socializing with your fingers. Brilliant! Gone are the days of racism, or when the shy had no social skills. Many friendships begin by typing around here.
I study the way you get together, discussing everything from politics to brownie recipes on Facebook. Indeed, you all share the same general knowledge. There is a – how do you call it? – a Romanian practicing yoga, and an American reading Caragiale. You all know each other so well, even when you book different tickets on MySpace…
Oh, how thrilling! A new baby-account is just being born. Currently there are only 5% of you remaining without a Facebook identity. How terribly lonely it must be for those 5%, socializing through their teeth. No wonder they`re so poor. I mean, employers read your CV section on Facebook.
Whatever.
Here is the truth: you survived. Now follow me readers, for it is obvious I come from Venus, where it got all hot and sweaty with the global warming epidemic and all. We had no typed communication to tackle it, you see. So here`s why I`m green and confused, the last of my kind: as our population grew, we did not know each other.
Whilst you, my intriguing friends, do.
